A Look Into NWSC Digital Services
As National Water and Sewerage Corporation(NWSC) Celebrates 50years of serving Ugandans, a deliberation has been organised to look into how the corporation is adopting to digital service deliver as the whole world shifts to a digital economy.
The deliberation will be looking forward to answering the questions "Is NWSC providing services effeciently? How has Uganda's digital Transformation enabled NWSC to deliver?".
The event which will take place on Tuesday 20th December 2022 from 4:00PM - 6pm via Twitter Space will be hosted by NBS Senior Journalist Canary Mugume. The Guest Speakers will be Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha the MD NWSC and Mr Ibrahim Kitata the LC5 Chairman- Lwengo District. It is being coordinated by the Youth Advocacy Foundation Uganda-YAFU.
NWSC was formed by Decree No. 34 in 1972 to serve the urban areas of Kampala, Entebbe, and Jinja. In 1995, NWSC was re-organized under the NWSC Statute. The company was given more authority and autonomy and the mandate to operate and provide water and sewerage services in areas entrusted to it, on a sound commercial and viable basis. As of October 2016, most of towns in Uganda were receiving services from NWSC.
In 2011, NWSC began implementing a program to improve water supply to the Kampala Metropolitan Area that includes Kampala City, Wakiso District, Mukono District, Nansana, Ssabagabo, and Kira. The program, which will cost €212 million, was financed by the government of Uganda (€34 million), KfW (€20 million grant), the European Investment Bank (€75 million loan), the French Development Agency (€75 million loan), and the European Union Infrastructure Trust Fund (€8 million grant).
NWSC planned a new water treatment plant (Katosi Water Works), in Katosi in Mukono District with the capacity to supply 120,000 cubic meters (120,000,000 L) of water daily. The plans also include the refurbishment of the Ggaba complex of water treatment plants (Ggaba 1, Ggaba 2 and Ggaba 3). The Katosi source of water aimed at complementing the existing sources that have a daily capacity of 160,000 cubic meters (160,000,000 L).
In December 2015, NWSC announced plans to start serving some of Uganda's rural areas.As of March 2018, NWSC offered its services in 225 Ugandan towns and planned to connect services to 12,000 villages within its service areas by 2020.
In November 2022, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation again bagged the government services and Service for Utility awards at the Digital Impact Awards-Africa.
The Corporation was crowned; Best Digital Customer Service for Utilities and the Diamond award for Best Utilities and Government Services. Impressively, NWSC has bagged this award five times, consecutively.
The corporation has always prided itself in its commitment to service encompassed by professionalism, reliability, integrity, teamwork, result-oriented, innovation, and excellence.
In October 2022, National Water and Sewerage Corporation introduced an electronic billing system in a move to phase out physical bills.
The exercise is being piloted in a select NWSC service area in Kampala.
According to a statement from NWSC, electronic billing brings ease and convenience to the customer in accessing, receiving, and managing their water and sewerage bills, account statements, and much more.
The new system allows customers to receive the bill by SMS on their phone, or email address. It's also possible to check it on the NWSC website.
More will be shared at the organised deliberation that will be conducted to paint a picture on the corporation's digital service delivery.
