Peace, security key for economic growth - Tayebwa

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa says peace, security, stability and good governance is a prerequisite to achieving sustainable economic development.

He made the remarks Thursday while officiating the opening of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Office in Kololo, Kampala. The office will focus on the East African security.

“I am happy that KAS has ventured into regional security which is crucial to the development of our region. Peace and stability is key to the creation of sound, stable and equitable economic development, which at the end of the day impacts on the well-being of the society,” Tayebwa said in a tweet on Thursday.

The Deputy Speaker said some Ugandans do not take pride in celebrating that Uganda is a refugee-hosting country but in being a self-governing and peaceful country that is supporting the rest of the region in ensuring endless conflicts are stopped.

Uganda is one of the largest contributors to peacekeeping operations worldwide as per the 2021 study done by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a global security think tank.

Uganda’s troops are in the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) where it is the leading nation in the mission. It was the first country to deploy in the United Nations backed operations in 2007 and for it, it has earned recognition around the world.

In March, this year, Uganda deployed 1000 troops in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) under the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) command structure to back up the regional political efforts to stabilize the war-torn country.
