Woman Arrested in Rwampara After Stealing a Vehicle During Aponye’s Burial

Police in Rwampara district have arrested a woman who stole a motor vehicle during the burial of prominent businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, commonly known as Aponye, on Wednesday.

The vehicle, Suzuki Registration Number UAT 478N, was attached to Kikungiri Archdeaconry in Kabale Municipality’s Southern Division, under the Diocese of Kigezi.

Steven Kamara, the Rwampara District Police Commander, says that a Suzuki vehicle registration number UAT 478N had been reported stolen, and they “intercepted it at Kinoni Trading Center just as it was about to cross into Mbarara City.”

The vehicle has been parked at Rwampara Central Police Station.

“The suspect and the car will be taken to Rukiga district, where the offense was committed,” said Kamara.

The Kigezi Diocese Secretary, Rev. Canon Milton Nkurunungi, said yesterday that the vehicle was reported missing during a requiem service at the deceased’s home in Muhanga town council before Aponye was finally laid to rest.

“We were attending the burial [Aponye’s burial], and one of our archdeacon’s vehicles was stolen,” said Nkurunungi.

“We have reported to the police and to the DPC, and we have also informed those in Ntungamo and Mbarara. They are doing all the tracking to see that the vehicle is recovered,” he added.

Nkurunungi condemned the act, wondering how someone could take advantage of a situation of grief to commit such a crime.
