Rwandan man chokes on meat, dies in Kisoro

Police say a Rwandan man has allegedly choked on a piece of meat and died in Uganda's district of Kisoro.

Elias Nterivamunda aka Kanovera, 59, a resident of Kamonyi village, northern ward in Kisoro, died after he was choked by a piece of meat.

On September 30, 2024, Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate said the incident that happened on September 29, 2024, was already being investigated.

Explaining the incident, Maate said, “It is alleged that on September 29, 2024 at around 12:00pm at Kamonyi village, the deceased went with his daughter, Darafin Nzasabimana, who had arrived in Uganda from Rwanda to collect school fees from him".

Maate said the two are said to have gone to the bar owned by Beatrice Muhawenimana and ordered a local drink which they enjoyed. However, shortly after, the duo ordered for meat and matooke from Bakundakabo's restaurant and they shared the meat from the same plate.

“As they were eating together, meat got stuck in the throat of the father, neighbours were informed but the man had died already.  Police were then informed, the scene of crime visited and documented accordingly,” Maate added.

He said statements were obtained from the relevant witnesses and the body was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
