Kampala: Security guard committed to High Court for trial over raping woman for four hours

A security guard, Richard Mwesigye, who is facing a charge of raping a female colleague for four hours while watching pornography on his phone has been committed to High Court for trial.

The alleged incident occurred on August 28, 2023, at Yunia building Arua park in Kampala district.

According to the state’s evidence led by Ivan Kyazze presented in Buganda Road Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, Mwesigye worked as a security guard at a shop in Yunia plaza, where the victim was a casual worker cleaning carpets.

The accused allegedly lured the victim to a store, claiming she needed to pick up carpets, and then locked the door, threatening her with a piece of wood.

The victim reported that Mwesigye forcibly removed her clothes and had unprotected sex with her for four hours, during which he watched pornography on his phone.

The victim allegedly didn’t report the incident immediately due to fear for her life but later shared her ordeal with their boss, who encouraged her to report the case to the police.

Medical examinations revealed multiple healed tears around the victim’s genitals and a healed bruise on her right buttock, consistent with forceful penetration by a blunt object.

Mwesigye was also medically examined and found to be HIV-negative with a healed scar on his left hand.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) contends that Mwesigye has no valid defense and should be convicted as charged.

The case has been committed to the High Court for trial at the next convenient session.
