Floods Paralyze Traffic in Kampala Following Heavy Downpour
A heavy downpour on Wednesday morning caused severe flooding in several parts of Kampala, disrupting traffic and leaving key roads impassable.
Among the worst-hit areas were sections of the Kampala Northern Bypass, particularly around Kyebando, Sentema, and Namungoona.
The flooding has stranded motorists, with low-clearance vehicles at risk of stalling in the high waters.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has urged drivers to avoid affected routes and seek alternative paths until the water subsides.
In a post on X, Ministry of Works PR Allan Ssempebwa warned: "Heavy rains have caused flooding along sections of the Kampala Northern Bypass—particularly around Kyebando and Sentema–Namungoona. Motorists, especially those with low-clearance vehicles, are advised to avoid these areas and use alternative routes. Drive with caution and stay safe."
Commuters reported long traffic jams as vehicles struggled to navigate the flooded roads. Some drivers were forced to turn back, while others risked driving through the water, leading to further congestion.
The flooding highlights Kampala’s ongoing drainage challenges, particularly during heavy rains. Authorities have previously pledged to improve the city’s drainage systems, but persistent downpours continue to expose vulnerabilities in infrastructure.
As the rains persist, the public is advised to monitor weather updates and avoid flooded areas to prevent accidents and further disruptions.
