Lightning Strike Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Student in Kisoro

Police in Kisoro District, southwestern Uganda, have reported the sudden death of a 19-year-old student who was fatally struck by lightning during a heavy downpour on February 2, 2026.

The victim, identified as Perfect Namara, was inside her family’s home in Kirundo Village, Kasharara Parish, when lightning hit at around 7:00 pm. She was with her father, George Bitwite, and sister-in-law, Gloria Tuyisishimye, both of whom were rendered unconscious by the strike. Upon regaining consciousness, her father discovered that Namara had died instantly.

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, noting that the case was reported at Kirundo Police Station by local resident George Irinatwe. “It is very unfortunate to lose such a young life. Police were promptly informed, and our officers, together with medical personnel, attended the scene to verify the details,” Maate said. He added that the body remains at the scene pending a postmortem examination, and investigations are ongoing.

Authorities emphasized that lightning strikes remain a recurring hazard in Uganda, particularly during the rainy season. Government data shows that more than a dozen people lose their lives annually due to lightning, often during storms. Communities have been urged to take safety precautions, such as avoiding open spaces and unsafe structures during heavy rainfall.
