PLU Endorses Tayebwa for Deputy Speakership

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially thrown its weight behind Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa in the race for Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

The endorsement was announced via X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday by the Chairman of the PLU, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, signaling a significant political alignment ahead of the parliamentary vote.

In the statement, Gen. Muhoozi confirmed that the movement’s parliamentary caucus will act in unison. Citing direction from the highest political authority, he declared that all PLU Members of Parliament and those leaning towards the movement are mandated to back Tayebwa.

“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all PLU MPs and PLU leaning MPs will support Rt. Honourable Thomas Tayebwa for that position,” Muhoozi wrote.

The announcement effectively consolidates a substantial voting bloc behind Tayebwa, who is widely seen as a frontrunner for the position. The move is viewed by political analysts as an effort to ensure loyalty and discipline within the ruling establishment as Parliament prepares to constitute its leadership.

Political observers note that with the PLU’s backing, given Gen. Muhoozi’s influence and the "Commander-in-Chief’s" guidance, Tayebwa’s path to the deputy speakership now faces little to no opposition.

The election for the Deputy Speaker is slated to be held on 25th May 2026, the first day of the 12th Parliament’s sitting.
