Rukungiri man killed while fighting over a bar maid

Police in Rukungiri district have arrested  Omukazagiro cell LC1 chairperson Robert Birungi in Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district on allegations that he, together with other suspects, assaulted a man who later succumbed to his injuries.

Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate on Saturday identified the deceased as John Tukamuhabwa, a resident of Omukazagiro cell.

“Police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Tukamuhabwa.

It's alleged that during the night of September 29, 2023, at around 10:00 pm, at Omukagaana trading centre, Kahama cell, Murama parish, while the deceased was in the bar of one Kamani together with his other colleagues drinking, they developed a quarrel over a waiter, which resulted into a fight and the deceased decided to leave the place,” Maate said.

He explained that while on his way home, his colleagues bypassed him running and that Kamani and some of his workers were chasing him.

Eventually, they arrested Tukamuhabwa, took him back to the bar and continued assaulting him, according to Maate.

“Later they were joined by Birungi, the area chairperson of the said trading centre, who also joined in beating Tukamuhabwa. They then pushed him out and left him helplessly after robbing him of some of his belongings,” Maate added.

According to Maate, Tukamuhabwa was rescued by his mother who found him lying on the way to their home.

“He was carried to their home while in a critical condition and the following morning was taken to Nyakishenyi Community Health Center where he was further referred to Kabale Referral Hospital where he died on  October 2, 2023,” he stated.

Maate noted that a report was made by the mother, Evelyn Kenganzi, at Nyakishenyi Police Station and later to Rukungiri Police Station.

The scene, according to Maate, was visited and processed. Postmortem was done and one suspect, Birungi the area chairperson has been arrested to assist in investigations while others are on the run.
