Uganda’s Ambassador to South Sudan calls on politicians to calm tension ahead of poll
Uganda’s Ambassador to South Sudan Balya Ronnie has urged all the political parties in South Sudan to calm down tensions as election nears.
In his address to participants in the South Sudan Economic Conference that brought together many political parties, Amb. Balya argued that high political temperatures can lead to conflict that can destroy a country’s economy.
“As we approach the general election (2024), let us keep the temperature, the tensions below, and embark on solidarity as one people, South Sudanese,” Balya said.
He advocated for smart policies that will not take the country back to war.
Balya emphasized the need for politicians in South Sudan to embark on sportsmanship in politics.
“In participating in political competition, we are opponents; we are not enemies; let us maintain peace among our people,” he said.
He added that there would be economic growth in South Sudan only if the leaders united the citizens and brought peace to all corners.
Balya said for peace to prevail in South Sudan, there is a need for every leader and citizen to embark on production with the hope of lifting up their economy.
“Every able-bodied adult must participate in the market economy, especially idle youth,” he said.
He said with peace, the citizens would be able to carry out their activities and make their own food.
Due to the ongoing peace process, politicians are seen backing up their parties in political campaigns.
Political parties continue to embark on serious campaigns while cases of tension among parties continue to emerge, with some refusing to carry out their activities in areas under their control.
Till now, some crucial parts that can lead the country to an election have not been implemented, while the political situation remains serious.
